BACKGROUND
NSAIDS:
- First line treatment in management of acute inflammation
- Many side effects (gastrointestinal, cardiovascular, renal)
HERBAL anti-Inflammatory therapy (combination of BOSWELLIA & BROMELAIN):
- Clinically proven antioxidant & anti-inflammatory benefits
- Effective treatment of postoperative pain
- No side effects
- Promote patient’s comfort and joint mobility
AIM:
Evaluation of contribution of herbal anti-inflammatory therapy in the
treatment of postoperative pain after total knee replacement (TKR)
METHODS:
Population: 40 male patients who underwent TKR, aged 60-80 years
Methods of treatment
- All patients received the same spinal anesthesia (20 mg
ropivacaine) & the same postoperative pain treatment protocy
- 20 patients received herbal preparation (HP) 1 week before surgery,
morning & evening and the next 20 days postoperatively
Data recorded (data assessed at 4, 12 and 48 hours):
- i) resting pain (VAS)
- ii) vomiting
iii) itching
- iv) headache
- v) constipation
- vi) urinary retention
- vi) motion sickness
viii) dry mouth
- ix) drowsiness
RESULTS:
- VAS SCORE at 4, 12, 48 hours, the frequency of the use of
PCA system & total amount of tramadol were statistically lower
in HM group.
- Other parameters were significantly less affected in the HM
group.
CONCLUSIONS:
- Pre- and postoperative herbal anti-inflammatory therapy
significantly reduces pain after TR, as well as need for
opioids and their side effects
- Herbal anti-Inflammatory drugs have high
bioavailability, maximum effectiveness and great gastric tolerance.
